Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
