UN Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit

The UN Security Council voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the coming week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, ending over a decade of civil war.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of foreign terror groups in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the penalties, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the Middle East.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Previous US Visit

The upcoming meeting does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. In September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the UN General Assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
