EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
