The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
